Reflecting on 2025: A Year of National Impact for Morrells Handwriting

Training 6Training 6

What a year! In 2025, Morrells Handwriting made a significant national and local impact on handwriting education across England. From shaping national policy to supporting teachers in classrooms, it’s been a year of collaboration, recognition, and a shared commitment to ensuring handwriting remains a vital foundation for learning to write.

National Influence

One of the proudest moments was contributing to the Department for Education’s Writing Framework, published in July. This new guidance puts handwriting back at the heart of writing instruction. Recognised within the framework as a trusted handwriting expert, Morrells Handwriting has helped reinforce the importance of handwriting as a foundational skill that underpins composition, fluency, and confidence in writing. This contribution supports teachers in delivering consistent, evidence-informed handwriting instruction that genuinely improves outcomes for pupils.

This work has directly influenced national handwriting standards, supporting improved teaching practice and ensuring handwriting remains central to high-quality writing instruction rather than an afterthought.

I was delighted to work alongside Mark Stewart of Left n Write and fellow contributors to the framework. It was particularly encouraging to collaborate with professionals who share the same passion and determination to see handwriting taught well and valued appropriately.

Special thanks must also go to former MP Robin Walker for his vision and commitment to improving writing standards for every child. It was a genuine honour to help support and bring that vision into reality.

Professional Recognition

Cornwall DfE English Hub 2025 1A personal highlight has to be being introduced by Dr Timothy Mills MBE as a handwriting expert at the English Hub event in December. This acknowledgement reflects the growing national recognition of Morrells Handwriting’s expertise and its impact on handwriting education.

Another highlight of 2025 was helping to organise and taking part in the National Handwriting Association’s Study Day, Handwriting: Are we doing the right thing?, where everyone shared their insights and joined discussions on best practice and the future of handwriting education.

Also in 2025, I was honoured to be asked to contribute to Daleen Smith’s publication of Ready at Seven: Why School Readiness Cannot Be Rushed. I highly recommend it for your 2026 reading list.

Partnerships and Resources

Morrells Handwriting launch with RHINO StationeryThis year saw exciting collaborations, including with Victor Stationery and RHINO Stationery. Together, we launched a brand-new handwriting flip chart, providing a practical, classroom-ready resource that supports clear modelling and consistent teaching of handwriting.

Impact in Schools

Cornwall DfE English Hub 2025 3Throughout 2025, Morrells Handwriting worked directly with teaching staff across the UK, delivering training that improves confidence, consistency, and outcomes in handwriting instruction. Supporting teachers remains at the heart of everything I do.

One of the greatest highlights continues to be the feedback received from the schools I work with:

“We used Morrells with great impact, almost removing handwriting as a barrier to writing attainment.”
Tom Little, Headteacher

My sincere thanks go to all the teaching staff who continue to engage so thoughtfully with training and implement handwriting with care and consistency in their classrooms.

Special thanks also go to Aspire Trust (Cornwall) and Lingfield Education (Middlesbrough) for their ongoing commitment to strengthening handwriting across their schools. It has been an honour and a privilege to work alongside such dedicated professionals.

Looking Ahead

2026 is shaping up to be an exceptional year, marked by several innovative initiatives we’ve been developing throughout 2025, including the launch of a groundbreaking project and a strategic collaboration with leading experts in the field of handwriting. We look forward to sharing more soon.

I will also be delivering a keynote for Worcestershire County Council’s Handwriting Matters event and running workshops with TG Jones (formally WHSmith’s) and the Isle of Man Government.

Here’s to another year of making handwriting matter!
